About Us
ABOUT US
The Green Party is a global movement quickly gaining power in more than 80 countries around
the world. Greens are committed to a universal ideal: respect the planet and all its natural wonders, so that it will be healthy for future generations. Greens around the world also seek justice in an economic system that works for people, not corporations. We are bound together by the 10 Key Values. Inspired by the Green Party success in Germany, American activists came together in 1984 to develop a movement in the U.S. to address both environmental and social concerns. They were intent upon running candidates, and chose to take on issues such as homelessness, and the treaty rights of Native Americans, in addition to environmental causes.
Here in Charlotte we are among 22 regional groups in North Carolina that emerged since the
2000 election. In late September 2001 these groups came together in Charlotte to formalize the
State Green Party - an alternative voice in North Carolina politics. Both locally and nationally
the majority of voters now elect to stay out of the political process. We feel that this disengagement from the political process occurs because the two major parties are awash in soft money from corporations and strongly under the influence of lobbyists. Green candidates elected across America refuse funding from corporations and businesses. It is our belief that money has corrupted our system of government, both on a national and a local level.
Month by month we are seeing an increase in involvement. We got behind the campaign to
defeat the recent referendum on the arena bundling. We were successful in helping get Gray Newman, a CAGP officer, elected to the non-partisan Mecklenburg Water and Soil Conservation Board. We invite all those looking for a better way to participate in the democratic political process to consider becoming involved with the Greens. We would especially encourage anyone who would like to fight for environmental and social justice by running for political office to consider running as a Green candidate. Although we do not have ballot access yet, we would like the opportunity to support persons who are willing to run in non-partisan races such as school board races.
We meet quarterly in Charlotte (check Events Page for details).
The meetings are open to anyone interested in taking part in our growth. We are looking for suggestions for
future projects and issues as the Party grows across the State.
We accept donations. However we are unable to accept donations from corporations or
businesses. Checks can be made out to: ‘Charlotte Area Green Party’ and mailed to our treasurer:

Mission
Statement
The goal of the Charlotte Area Green Party is to
meet the expectations of the community left disenfranchised by corporate
influence of the current two-party grip on power, to develop throughout the year
statements covering all local and national issues in order to reflect a Green
perspective, to influence locally those issues which concern us as a group to
benefit the community, and to build an organization which has political
credibility and an appeal to all voters, but especially those segments of
society previously disillusioned by politics as practiced by the Republicans and
Democrats. The Charlotte Area Green Party is linked to the NC Green Party which has affiliated with the national Green Party (GPUS).
